Chocolate cake on a whim, a recipe fail

I've recently started watching YouTube videos with some regularity. Yes, I do realize most people have been doing this since the early 2000s. I don't love watching things, though, so generally avoid videos. However, I follow some people on IG who have YouTube channels and I somehow got sucked in. I'm still fairly selective about what I watch because I get antsy if I'm watching anything for too long.
One way to get me to watch is to talk about chocolate. I really love chocolate. It's one of my absolute favorite things! Milk, dark, semisweet - so good. (Don't give me a white chocolate bar. And if it has fruit? Don't. Even. Try.) So, it wasn't really surprising that '2 Ingredient Chocolate Cake' caught my eye.* I immediately sent it to my younger daughter on Saturday (who shares my love of cooking and eating and chocolate) and said we'd have to make it soon. I had actually purchased a cake for Mother's Day, so it seemed like overkill to make it Sunday.
Guess what, though? Making it today wasn't overkill. It was actually kind of a rough day, so I decided to have a delicious dinner (shrimp and zucchini noodles, tossed in an Asian-inspired sauce) and a fantastic desert. Sometimes we should have the fancy stuff even when we're not celebrating. (In fact, I failed a certification exam this morning, so we were doing the opposite of celebrating.)
RECIPE INFO
Ingredients:
- 9 oz of Semi Sweet Dark Chocolate (either wafers or a block chopped into small pieces); I used dark chocolate wafers
- 4 Eggs (separated)
Preparation Time: About 15 minutes
Cooking Time: About 30 minutes
Preheat the oven to 325˚F (170˚C).
1. Place the chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl and melt completely (I do this at 50% power and mix every 30 seconds.)
2. Separate the egg yolks and egg whites.
3. Using a mixer, whisk the whites until soft peaks form.
4. Add the yolks, one by one, into the bowl of chocolate, whisking to combine.
5. Using a rubber spatula, gently fold ⅓ of the whipped egg whites into the yolk and chocolate mixture. Repeat with the remaining egg whites, adding ⅓ at a time.
6. Pour the batter in a greased 6-inch (15 cm) cake mold. (I used a pie plate because I don't have a cake pan in that size.)
7. Bake for 30 minutes.
8. Once the cake is cool to the touch, run a knife around the sides and then gently invert it onto a plate.
9. Then, the most important step: THROW IT AWAY
This was seriously one of the worst cakes I've ever had. I suppose, if you like sweet quiche, then you may like it. Otherwise, don't waste your time. I honestly couldn't believe the number of people who have posted about this truly terrible recipe. Who are these people?
Bad cake didn't make my day taste better, but it sure gave us something to laugh about! Dessert ended up being some chocolate chips melted in peanut butter. East, sweet, and foolproof. Younger daughter decided to make a cake with the normal ingredients, but I'm just sitting with my decaf of coffee and watching some Food Network. Tomorrow is another day!
* I removed the link to the video prior to publishing this post. While I legit think anyone who makes this and likes it is crazy, I certainly don't want to be mean to them! I just question their taste.
